We Must Protect Our Environment From Extinction – Says Sen Rose Oko

In a bid to save the environment from absolute extinction as a result of human activities,

Cross River North Senatorial District, Sen. Rose Oko has co-sponsored a bill on environment that was initially sponsored by Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, representing  Lagos Central Senatorial District at the Legislative Chambers in Abuja.

The bill was meant to checkmate the excessive disposal of plastic materials in the society and ensure that alternative means are created so as to protect the nation against massive erosion, flash flooding across the 35 states in Nigeria, was basicay meant to mark ‘World Environment Day’ on June 5.

2018 Flood Outlook of the Nigeria Hydrological Agency (NHSA), predicted coastal, river, flash and urbanflooding in 35 of the 36 States of the Federation, a situation which calls for so much worry, considering the fact that for a nation plagued with Desertification in the North; Flooding and Erosion in almost all States; there is need to take proactive measures.

Interestingly, with nine (9) African Countries having introduced a ban on plastic bags, most recently being Kenya, Rwanda, both Sen. Oluremi Tinubu and Sen. Rose Oko believed the nation need as a matter of urgency to establish a system that ensures sorting of waste and recycling that could also serve as a source of wealth to the nation.

However, they called for intensive awareness campaign that would help to enlightened or educated Nigerians on the need to reduce plastic materials in some of the nation’s drainage channels.

Besides, to reduce waste from plastic pollution, several Countries including the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia etc. have introduced measures including increase in tax payable on single use bags and plastic, payment for these bags, consumer education and retailer take-back programmes.

Following this motion as  moved by Sen Rose Okoji Oko PhD, The senate accordingly Resolved:

– Urge all States of the Federation to participate in creation and review of policies; and shedding light on our environmental issues

– Urge the Federal Ministry of Environment and relevant agencies to ensure sensitization, particularly of young ones, on these environmental issues

– Mandate legislation on adequate waste disposal and recycling system

Urge the introduction of eco-friendly reusable bags

– Urge an increase in tax payable onsingle use plastic bags and bottles to discourage use.

– Urge the Federal Government to Increase funding for the environment and environmental issues.

This is one of the many motions moved at the Upper Legislative Chambers by Distinguished Senator Rose Okoji Oko PhD.
