Chief of Staff and son-in-law to Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, Uche Nwosu, has dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Democratic Peoples’ Party (DPP).
Nwosu as well as some members of the State House of Assembly and some of Okorocha’s aides defected to DPP on Tuesday.
Their defection is reportedly linked to the fallout of the APC governorship primaries in the state in which Nwosu failed to emerge as the party’s gubernatorial candidate.
Okorocha recently declared his support for President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC in the 2019 general elections, as he said he remained a member of the party.
The governor was however quick to mention that he would work for the victory of Nwosu as the next governor of the state in 2019 even as he pursues his own dream of becoming a Senator representing Orlu Senatorial District on the platform of the APC.
Okorocha, while speaking with newsmen at the Imo State Government House, said “What happened in Imo was a clear case of injustice, where Uche Nwosu won the primary and was robbed of the ticket. This injustice must be addressed. However, in spite of the fact that my aides are leaving the party, I am still a member of APC and will not leave the party.
“I tried to persuade them not to leave, but they have made up their minds. I have done what I can to make them remain in the party, they disobeyed me. I don’t have any moral justification to stop them.
“President Buhari is not behind the injustice done by the party in the state but (Adams) Oshiomhole is solely responsible for all the injustice meted to my people in Imo State. For me, I am still a member of APC. Buhari still remains my candidate and I will support him.”
Meanwhile, Okorocha has declared that he would support his son-in-law Uche Nwosu, as he dumps the APC for DPP.
Okorocha disclosed this at the Government House, Owerri, as his aides dumped the party following unending controversies rocking the APC both at the national and state levels.
He however insisted that the new political party of Nwosu’s choice must endorse Buhari’s re-election bid in 2019 and said that he has chosen to remain in the APC.
The governor said all his loyalists were treated unfairly as well as denied the tickets of the party during the last APC primaries, as he accused Adams Oshiomhole, the APC National Chairman, of destroying the party.
While baring his mind on the political developments in the APC, he said “I know most of you are aware of what is happening in APC, from the removal of Osita Izunaso, as the National Organizing Secretary and the coming of Adams Oshiomole as the National Chairman.
“However, our party that is known for uprightness and justice which reflects the image of Buhari has been tainted by the action of Oshiomole.
“What we saw in Imo is an example, where people who did not contest for the party’s primaries now fly the ticket of the party in the state. I have not left APC. I will support Buhari for Presidency.
“What they don’t understand is that in Imo, we don’t play party politics we play politics of individual. What they don’t know is that people join APC, because of me. I have done all I can to ensure that APC members stay back in APC.
“I will not be surprised to see most of them who contested the primaries join other political parties to pursue their ambitions. I cannot stop them to join any party of their choice.
“Buhari does not know what Oshiomole, is doing. I have pleaded to those who want to join other parties to please support President Mohammadu Buhari for Presidency.
“The politics of Imo State has changed now. It is no longer an individual controlling the politics.
“As a father of Imo State, I still remain in the best position to select the best among Emeka Ihedioha, Hope Uzodimma, Ifeanyi Araraume and Uche Nwosu, who is the best among all of them. Nwosu believes in Imo State, he has investment in the state.
“Nwosu is my candidate. Any party that these young men want to go they are free and I want to say it again that Nwosu is my candidate.
“In selecting who will govern Imo State, you look at the past record, their history and what investment they have brought to Imo state. I want to announce to you that I am still running for the Senator and my party is still the APC.
“All these people are used as instrument to fight me for 2023. It will not affect my victory in 2019. Let me also say this, my boys never intended to betray me. They were given fake hope.
“Hope has played them 419 and today they never got the governor and deputy. They were promised that they would be given the gubernatorial ticket to Owerri zone. And today, where is the ticket for Owerri zone. They lost it. They have given it to another person.
“What happened in Imo was a clear case of injustice, where Uche Nwosu won the primary and was robbed of the ticket. This injustice must be addressed. However, in spite of the fact that my aides are leaving the party, I am still a member of APC and will not leave the party.”
