R Kelly has been taken into custody again during a hearing in Chicago after failing to pay child support.
The R&B singer was released on bail last month after he was charged with 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse involving four women, three of whom were underage at the time the abuse is alleged to have occurred.
He has been told he will not be released from jail until he pays all $161,000 (£122,000) in child support money he owes. Prepared to pay some Kelly’s publicist Darryll Johnson said the singer came to the hearing prepared to pay $50-60,000 (£38,000-£45,000), but the judge demanded the full amount.
His publicist said Kelly did not have the whole amount because he has not been able to work.
Kelly – real name Robert Kelly – turned himself in to the police last month and was later arrested. His arrest came in the wake of a high profile documentary, Surviving R Kelly, which told detailed allegations made by a group of women who said they were abused by the singer. He spent a weekend in jail before someone posted his 100,000 dollar (£76,000) bail. It is not known who paid the large sum for Kelly’s bail, and his defence lawyer said at the time that the singer’s finances were “a mess”. The singer has denied any wrongdoing and says his accusers are lying.
