A political pressure group, Obubra Women in Politics (OWI) an umbrella body of Obubra Local Government Area women in politics and professionals, has appealed to the Governor of Cross River State, Senator (Prof) Ben Ayade to appoint women from the Local Government into his yet to be released Commissioner’s list.
The group leader, Mrs Frida Ayami made the appeal in a statement in Calabar on Wednesday.
Lamenting Cross River State Government negligence in appointing Obubra women, the group also threatened to stage a statewide heavy protest so as to draw the attention of the state Governor, Ben Ayade to their plight.
The body which also comprised Obubra women entrepreneurs as well as Obubra women resident in the State and outside Nigeria, decried long period of exclusion of Obubra women in State government and other State executive appointments.
She said : “Our appeal to the Governor is for inclusion of at least a woman from Obubra extraction into his in-coming cabinet which is predicated on the long period of neglect and marginalisation suffered by Obubra women under successive administrations.
Responding to their appeal, the member representing Obubra/Etung federal constituency and the House of Representatives Committee Chairman on “Legislative, Budget and Research”, Rt. Hon. Mike Etaba assured the women that all they have said will be communicated to the state governor, Ben Ayade.
Etaba said he understood how aggrieved the women are, but called for calm and understanding while assuring them of the governor willingness to attend to their plight.
