Following the gross Misconduct and negligence by primary health workers at Primary Health Care center Mayne Avenue, where a nurse aided by the in-charge beat and pushed a woman in labour out of the facility, and she ended up giving birth to her baby on the grass in front of the health center, the community has risen to state that the do not want to see those set of workers in their facility again.
The stated that the health workers were completely heartless and negligent in their duties. The angry youths further stated that if not for the timely intervention of the Director General of Primary Health Dr Betta Edu who usually comes from time to supervise and engage with them in the community and health center, and the effort she put in to ensure that a new health facility was built for them through calabar south Local Government council, and approval of The Governor Sen Ben Ayade, she could have come to either meet those health workers hospitalized or even worse.
As the fondly refer to Dr Betta as Mama for the boys, one of the aggrieved youth said “ mummsy na you we respect, we know what we can do. This woman comot cloth stand for outside born pikin, na one of our big woman here; MMA Etubom wey come help this woman to deliver the pikin before we enter go push the nurse Eme out to help the woman after that before we come reach you so we go sabi our next step”
Dr Edu who was in complete shock the a woman could give another woman such treatment said health workers have continued to be one of the major reasons why maternal mortality has failed to reduce in Nigeria. Imaging if that woman or her baby died, we will add one more name to the death toll right?
The DG who was in tears said she had warned health workers time without number to treat patients with right attitude but the have refused to change. “ I spend my time going from community to community to plead with women to leave Traditional Birth Attendants, Prayer houses and homes to deliver in Health facility, then a woman shows up in a health facility in labor and she is beaten and pushed out, what worse treatment could a human give to another human?, this kind of wickedness is unheard of, this health workers will be used to set example for others who have refused to do the work which they are paid to do”
DG went on to say“ health workers carelessness have lead to death of many women. The Governor of Cross River State has been faithful in paying workers and on time too, he is adding another 1000 health workers to improve things in health sector. This is in addition to the rural allowance paid as incentives and facility upgrade to improve services. what more could a committed Governor do to make things work? Since the have refused to change we will show them the way out and bring in people who are ready to work!”
The DG, has with immediate effect suspended all the staff involved and the PHC coordinator who supervises then. All staff involved are to face disciplinary committee and might face tough sanctions including dismissal if the board so decides.
The woman has been admitted and the DG has provided for cloths for her and her baby as well as other provisions she requires to care for the baby.
A staff from the Agency Mrs Henshaw said “the agency in collaboration with partners and major stakeholders spend quality time and resources from one ward to another in the 196 PHCs across the states, to make sure women don’t go to TBAs to avoid maternal mortality in our dear state.
Now our efforts are yielding fruits as at the last supervison done. Erring staff should not block our success story. This will save as deterrent to others.
