Nico Mbarga Music Competition seeks to promote talent in music industry in Cross River State and reward young musicians from the state or who are resident in the state.
Prince Nico Mbarga was a renowned musician who’s mother was from Cross River State. He made the state proud and championed the cause of the music industry in the 70s and 80s.
He is renowned for his hit song “Sweet Mother”, recorded with his band Rocafil Jazz, which has been described as the best-selling song in history by an African recording artist according to Wikipedia.
The competition was named after Prince Nico Mbarga because of these immense contributions in the music industry in the state.
The theme of the 2019 edition of the Nico Mbarga Music Competition is “Humanity” which also happens to be the theme of the renowned annual Carnival Calabar And Festivals.
The 2019 edition of the competition has two categories, the Afro Hip Hop/Rap category and the Afro Soul/Reggae category. Each category has a prize money of one thousand pounds for the winner.
Participants are expected to register, record their song and submit their entries to the website between 5th October 2019, when the submission of entries open and 31st of October, 2019 when submission of entries close.
Voting will take place online on the facebook page of the competition in November, 2019 and scores from the online voting will form fifty percent of the total winning scores while the judges scores will make up the other fifty percent.
Scores will be based on interpretation of the theme, quality of music, production and many other criteria. Song must not be longer than 5 minutes.
