Social Democratic Party(SDP), governorship candidate, Mr. Eyo Ekpo has called on the federal government to reduce the cost of governance in a bid to meet up with the new minimum wage demand of the Nigerian workers.
Ekpo was unhappy with the way in which the government have handled the minimum wage demand of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) despite the fact that the country is blessed with abundance mineral resources.
The former Attorney-General of Cross River State, who was a guest on ‘talk dey mata’, in a pidgin English radio program on Correct FM, Calabar the Cross River State capital, stated that the new minimum wage is practically meant for level 3 workers.
“Governors will have no problem paying the minimum wage if they all reduce the cost of governance-cut down on the siren blaring cars, reduce corruption. They won’t only pay the minimum wage, they will still have enough to embark on people oriented projects.
“The Governors have no morale justification for not wanting to pay the minimum wage as the workers who are members of the NLC are the once that sign out these cash to them. The NLC know there is money, and they know that political office holders keep these monies for themselves.
‘The minimum wage is for level 3 workers who are not themselves much and that no matter the amount proposed and approved, if managers of the economy do not do their job properly workers will still suffer.
