Barr. Tina Banku Agbor, Raising The Bar For Women Participation In Nigeria’s Politics

It is rare to see women holding exalted political offices considering the fact that majority of them are limited by self occassioned by men’s dominance, society expectations, cultures etc.

However, in today’s dispensation, women have come out enmasse to make their voice heard irrespective of the dominance of their men counterpart in the political settings of Nigeria, holding key positions both at the federal and state levels.

Such has been the case with Barrister, Tina Banku Agbor, whose giant stride keeps vibrating in the minds of her followers in Boki Local Government Area and the State at large considering her political movement within the state.

Following in the footsteps of female lawmakers of Cross River State such as Sen Florence Ita-Giwa Senator Rose Oko, and Amb Nkoyo Toyo who have done the state proud at National Assembly, Barr. Tina has equally stepped on the right path of displaying the positive side of women in politics.

Barr. Tina is not a neophyte in the game of politics in Nigeria, having contested in both state and federal Constituencies elections and made some quality contributions in rebranding the general outlook of women in politics.

Recognizing her great potentials she was appointed Secretary to Cross River State Government in June 2015 by Sen. Prof Ben Ayade the Governor of Cross River State (making her first female Secretary to Government of the State) since then she has endeared herself to the heart of the Governor, she is regarded as a confidant and one of the few trusted people in Sen Prof Ben Ayade’s administration. She is a complete believer in the administration of Sen Prof Ben Ayade. She is the originator of the AYADEISM philosophy. Every time she finds an opportunity, she explains what the philosophy is about. Simply put according to her, its the philosophy of government investment in the very primary needs of the people in a depressed economy, to stem unrest while government concentrates in creating a viable economy creating jobs and businesses to absorb the unemployed. She is a firm believer in this philosophy.

Born to the family of Mr and Mrs Columbus Bisong Agbor, has suffered tremendous injustice in the male dominated polity of Boki and the state. She joined politics in 1998 when she joined Democratic Party of Nigeria(DPN) when she contested for the position of House of Representatives for the Boki/Ikom constituency in the primaries. After a clear victory, the victory was overturned in favour of her mail counterpart. She again contested for the state House of Assembly for Boki I I constituency under APP again after a clear win with a lead of over one thousand votes again it was overturned in favour of her mail opponent who contested under PDP. Barr Tina Agbor was however undaunted. She kept on with the political associations and deep participation. Suffice it to mention that in 2015 she also showed strong interest in contesting for the House of Representatives position again but the indexes were not in her favour and she stepped down. She has kept a steady and deep participation in all her political activities in the state since she first joined politics in 1998.

Barrister Tina attended Government primary School Borum, where she obtained her first school leaving certificate before proceeding to obtain her secondary school certificate (WAEC) from Kano Community Commercial College in 1979.

Barr. Tina then went on to undertake a programme of study at the Centre for business studies at Meridian House, Greenwich High Street, London, where she obtained the Cambridge and Oxford Advanced Level Certificate in 1984. She also proceeded to the Thames Valley University, Ealing College, London where she bagged a Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree in 1990 and later enrolled at the Nigerian Law School, Lagos, where she obtained the prestigious B.L Certificate in 1992. She went on to acquire a Masters Degree in Managerial Psychology (M.M.P) at the University of Lagos in 2008.
Barr Tina Banku Agbor speaks the main three languages of Nigeria Ibo Hausa and Yoruba fluently making her a true Nigeria.

She vehemently opposed men’s domination of the political space and a strong advocate for women participation and the education and mentoring of the girl child.
Interestingly, Barr. Tina can simply be regarded as a consummate and experienced politician, an entrepreneur, Real Estate Consultant and a community builder going by her tireless efforts to ensure that her wealth of experience will be of great value in representing the people in higher capacities.
