In a bid to bridge gender gap and expand developmental frontiers for the female gender, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs. RoseMary Archibong has at the on-going 2019 Women2Women Plus Impact Conference, holding at the Women Development Centre, Parliamentary, Calabar mentored women on Global Skills for an Information and Communication Technology-driven century.
In her paper presentation on the subject “Mentoring Women for Global Skills,” the Commissioner stated that “with the work place evolving new dynamics, the widening change in business models and the advent of global industries, acquisition of global skills in such a highly competitive, profit-oriented, digitised “world becomes imperative.
Mrs. Archibong called on Nigerian leaders to borrow a leaf from Canada’s 2017 Global Skills Strategy, which is part of Canada’s Innovation Agenda to promote economic growth and create more middle class jobs for her citizens, giving employers fast access to highly qualified global talent.
“Cross River State has already been positioned by the digital leadership of Gov Ayade to draw from the global skilled talent. A quick reference to the skilled rice farmers from Thailand (men and women) at the Rice Seed and Seedling City in Calabar is apt,” the Commissioner remarked.
Decrying the massively wider gender gap in digital literacy especially in Africa, owing to poverty, poor access to computer, dearth of needed utilities, gender bias and gender stereotype, the Commissioner pointed out that digital/ICT literacy skills remain critical among the basic requirements for international employment.
Continuing, the Information and Orientation Commissioner charged women to be ICT-savvy in order to instil discipline on the younger generation, adding that younger females must begin to channel their efforts to online research, rather than engaging in frivolities.
She said “conscious strategic mentorship is most apt when it addresses the girl child, instituting the CAN – DO – SPIRIT in the young girl and training her to avoid distractions are critical. Early exposure to international best practices would enhance the scope of the perception of the growing girl and take her eyes of Local Championships. Mentorship on typical Interview Questions and Answers, writing of CV’s, preparing for interviews, choosing a career, finding jobs in Africa and beyond, how to grow your business are all mentoring topics to consider.”
Mrs. Archibong revealed to participant Google’s introduction of an on-line training program called Google Digital Skills for Africa with training in English, French and Portuguese Programmes, with centres in the various Universities such as the Cross River University of Technology, Calabar, and University of Port Harcourt, whose aim is to train job seekers and entrepreneurs on how to expand their businesses, stay competitive, locate International jobs, and improve productivity and profit, while charging the women to take advantage of such opportunity.
Also speaking, the President, Women 2 Women Plus International, Mrs. Victoria Emah-Emah said the theme for this year’s conference – ‘Repositioning Women for Maximum Impact’— is aimed at building capacity in women to thrive in their various fields of human endeavour.
She further stated that the focus of her foundation in 2019 is to teach women on branding and packaging of products, exposing them to emerging markets and giving them international connection to explore.
Mrs. Emah-Emah hinted that the 2-day Conference will end with presentation of awards of meritorious service to deserving personalities who have blazed the trail in various human endeavours, with the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs. RoseMary Archibong, one of such worthy recipients.
